Rage – Summer Breeze Open Air 2010

Rage is a classic and the Band is always a blast to watch. Especially on the small stage, the Band was able to rock even more then normal and got the place to boil within minutes. Especially watching guitarist Victor Smolski is always an event and a celebration for your ears.

Shooting Notes
Rage was the first and probably the only Band that actually had some nice light on the tentstage. So I could shoot at ISO 800 at f2.8 an a shutter speed of 1/250 which is pretty nice for a concert and works great with me. I used the 24-70 and the 70-200 for the set. I could have gotten the 10-22 out, but the Band wasn’t close enough to the edge of the stage most of the time.

Parkway Drive – Summer Breeze Open Air 2010

After listening to their new Album “Blue” for a while now, I was quite excited to see Parkway Drive live. As I had hoped, the Band was a blast on stage and within minutes they had the whole place rocking along to their set. The boys were all over the stage which made it even more fun to watch

Shooting Notes
Shooting Parkway Drive in the middle of the day was easy and with a shutter speed of 1/800 at ISO 400 and f2.8 I could concentrate on framing the image and looking for moments without a need to worry about exposure or motion blur. The set was also idle to use every lens in the bag and I could go from wide anlge to tele without problems.

The Black Dahlia Murder – Summer Breeze Open Air 2010

Trevor Strnad makes shooting The Black Dahlia Murder always a lot of fun. The Singer is all over the stage, screaming his lungs out and rocking the crowd. The people in front of the stage seemed to see that the same way and where cheering for the Band like crazy.

Shooting Notes
With Fronter Trevor Strnad all over the stage and often really close to the edge of the stage, the Canon Ef-s 10-22 was a great option here for a couple of images. Do to the aperture of f4.5 I had to change the ISO to 400 to compensate for that. I was using the Canon Ef 24-70 for the rest of the set shooting at 1/500 and up to freeze the action on stage at f3.2.

Even though it was still the middle of the day The 69 Eyes tried to bring a bit of darkness to the Summer Breeze Festival. Powerful Songs combined with going through one Rock’n'Roll pose after the next made the show quite a lot of fun to watch.

Shooting Notes
Shooting The 69 Eyes was a blast. Do to the time, it was bright enough to shoot at f3.5 and a shutter speed of 1/500 of a second. Even though I had to shoot at ISO 400, do to the good light, that wasn’t a problem at all. I was shooting this set with the Canon Ef 24-70 and the Canon Ef 70-200 for some close-ups, I wanted to get the Canon Ef-s 10-22 out of the bag too, but the Band kept away from the edge of the stage, so it wasn’t really an option.

Skull Fist – Oberhausen, Turbinenhalle – 17.09.2011

Skull Fist from Canada started the evening with their Set. They didn’t really fit in with the rest of the Bands, but nonetheless the visitors seemed to enjoy the show quite a bit and started cheering soon. Another reason for that might have been ‘fanclub’ the Band brought and that screamed enthusiastically from the first minute on.

Shooting Notes
This was one of those sets, that make me always have a 50mm f1.4 in the bag. It was so dark and there where only a couple of spotlights on the Band. I was shooting at f1.4 and ISO 1600 with a shutter speed of 1/100 to get at least a little bit of light into my camera. If it would have been allowed, I would have gotten my flash out of the bag to get some light into the faces of the artists and counteract the mostly colourfull lightwash.

You can’t talk about charisma and stage presence without mentioning Alexx Wesselsky ‘der Checker’ Mister Eisbrecher. Even though it was still pretty early in the day, the place in front of the stage was packed and the people loved the show. Not just Alexx was giving his best, but the rest of the Band was rocking out hard.

Shooting Notes
The light on the big stage was a bit better then on the small stage during the day which made it possible to shoot at ISO 200 at f2.8 and 1/400 of a second. I was using the 24-70 most of the time, because the Band kept of the edge of the stage, but still was pretty close. To get a couple of close-ups and drummer shots the 70-200 was the right choice.

Fiddler’s Green – Summer Breeze Open Air 2010

Bands like Fiddler’s Green always have a big advantage on festivals. Do to the danceable fun songs audience participation is guaranteed. Nothing else happened today. The Band played a great and fun show and had the crowd dancing and jumping within minutes into their set. This combined with awesome Songs and a lot of movement on the stage made this show fantastic.

Shooting Notes
Fiddler’s Green were a blast to shoot. Not only was there enough light on stage, to be able to be set the camera to ISO 200 at f3.5 and a shutter speed of 1/320 of a second and faster, but I was also able to use all my lenses and get a wide variety of images, because the Band was all over the stage.

Beatsteaks – Köln, Palladium – 02.12.2011

Long before the show, the Palladium in Köln was sold out and everybody seemed quite excited to see the Beatsteaks live again. I haven’t had the pleasure too often, but I can only say, that the Band is a blast to watch and I was quite excited for the show myself. As expected the Concerthall was packed up to the roof and within minutes after the Beatsteaks show started, the crowd went wild cheering and jumping.

Shooting Notes
This was the first night I was out using the Canon 5D Mark II on a concert, also bringing my trusty Canon 40D. So I was able to use my Canon Ef 24-70 f2.8 on the full frame body and had the Canon Ef 70-200 f2.8 IS on the crop-camera for a little more reach. During the whole Show I had to adjust to some major changes in exposure do to the lightshow and the fact, that Singer Arnim Teutoburg-Weiß was all over the place. When the lights flared up on the stage, I could shoot easily at ISO 800 at f2.8 and a shutter speed above 1/400 of a second while I had to go to ISO 3200 and 1/160 the compensate for the dark edges of the stage. This combined with the constant movement of the musicians made it quite a wild and fun shoot.

Bosse – Bochum Total 2011

With being that long on the Road as Bosse are, it promised to be a good and intense show. Only problem was that the weather was getting worse and after Frida Gold finished their set quite a couple of people left the festival area which just left more room for the others to dance, party and enjoyed themselves.

Shooting Notes
Bosse played a high action show, with a lot of stuff happening, so keeping a fast shutter speed was a must for the set. So I was shooting wide open at f2.8 and at ISO 800 gave me enough light to shoot at 1/200 and faster. Do to the fact, that the weather got worse and the rain started pouring down I was just using the Canon 24-70 and the Canon 70-200 wanting to keep my lensbag closed as long as possible. I got a couple of drops of rain on the front of the lens, but with the strong backlight coming in, it turned out to be a nice effect and I didn’t mind.

With being all over the Radio and the Musicvideostations Andreas Bourani was well know, which resulted in quite the crowd on this early sunday afternoon. Even though it started to rain during his set, the people still enjoyed the show.

Shooting Notes
With the Andreas Bourani and his Band staying back of the edge of the stage most time during she show, I kept the Canon Ef-S 10-22 in the bag and concentrated shooting with the Canon Ef 24-70 and the 70-200. Luckily I had a little time left at the end of the set and was able to get the Sigma 50mm f1.4 out too which turned out to be my favourite lens this weekend. Especially on the big stage with enough distance to work comfortably and no need to worry about having problems framing the shots, I loved shooting the lens wide open. Do to the bad weather I was shooting at ISO 400 to get enough light in my lenses using them at f2.8 for maximum effect at a shutter speed of at least 1/250 of a second and up. Do to the fact that it was starting to rain during the set and some nice backlight I was able to capture some great effects.

Even though it wasn’t raining really hard when Frida Gold was up on Stage, it was still a bit chilly and so Alina Süggeler seemed a bit lightly dressed. On the other hand, she was moving so much back and forth on stage, that she probably didn’t had any problems with the cold. Overall everybody seemed to enjoy the show really much and even as it started to rain more, the people didn’t seem to mind.

Shooting Notes
With the rain still down quite a bit I was still able to shoot with all my lenses. Mostly I was using the Canon Ef 24-70 at f2.8 with ISO 400 and a shutter sheed of 1/200 which proved to be pretty perfect for the stage and time. I just got the 70-200 and the 10-22 out for a few shots and a bit of variaty in the set.

Ben Galliers – Bochum Total 2011

Do to some time issues I was just able to get to the WAZ-Stage really late and Ben Galliers Set was almost over. Next to that, Ben played a solo song at that moment, so the Band was in the back and he entertained the crowd by himself. Nonetheless it was a fun couple of Minutes and the lack of a Band made for quite an intimate atmosphere

Shooting Notes
Just like the Day before at the WAZ-Stage I was just using the Sigma 50mm f1.4 wide open, to catch some of that bokeh goodness. Do to the wide Aperture there was no need to worry about ISO or shutter speed and I could concentrage and getting some nice images.

Kettcar – Bochum Total 2011

After shooting Itchy Poopzkid I made my way to the 1Live Stage to shoot at least a couple of frames of Kettcar… and that was basicly all I got. After entering the pit I snapped about 10 frames before the securities ended the shooting for Band.

Shooting Notes
It was dark on Stage and there was just a single Spotlight on singer Marcus Wiebusch, that was it. So shooting at ISO 1250 wide open at f2.8 and a shutter speed of 1/125 was the only way to capture the scenery.

Itchy Poopzkid – Bochum Total 2011

I am not that big on punk music, but I always enjoy shooting it, because in 99% of the time you get quite an energetic show. Nothing else happened tonight with Itchy Poopzkid. Even though it started to rain again quite a bit, the place in front of the stage was packed and the crowd celebrated the band.

Shooting Notes
Do to the fact, that it got pretty dark outside by now and that there wasn’t any frontlight at the Pottmob-Stage I had to slap on the flash to get at least a little frontal fill light in. Shooting with ISO 800-1250 and a shutter speed of 1/100 at f2.8 didn’t made it any more fun. But at least the flash had the nice advantage, that it also lite up the rain that was coming down heavily as Itchy Poopzkid started their set which resulted in shots that looked a bit different.

The Frits – Bochum Total 2011

The big Highlight of the evening was the show of the legendary Ska-Band the Frits from Bochum. After being absent for 10 years, the Band started to play shows again in 2009 and found their way to the Bochum Total 2011 Stage. The Frits played a fun show and within minutes the first couple of rows started dancing to the off-beats coming from the stage. A real surprising to me were the amount of really young teens cheering for the Band and singing along every word by heart.

Shooting Notes
The high energy live show the Band played screamed for lots of light and that was what the photographers got. Shooting wasn’t really hard and even though there was a lot of backlight, there was still enough ambient light left to make it work. I was shooting wide open at f2.8 at ISO 800 and used a shutter speed of 1/200 and up. Even though I was a bit scared that all the movement on stage would result in an over average amount of images with motion blur, everthing worked out fine and I had a lot of keepers looking at the images afterwards.

Alin Coen Band – Bochum Total 2011

I was actually already on my way back to my car, when I decided to take a quick detour and shoot a couple of quick frames of the Alin Coen Band. In the end I stayed for the rest of the gig… it was fantastic. The Band was so much fun to watch – combined with beautiful Songs and a stagepressence that can only be described as exhilarating, the show was the one of the weekends highlights. I can only advice anybody to check them out at alincoen.com.

Shooting Notes
Coming up to the WAZ-Stage I decided beforehand that I wanted to shoot the whole gig with my Sigma 50mm f1.4. Even though that meant a lot more images would be out of focus to do the narrow depth of field then normal and the fixed focal lens would require a lot more work to get the framing right, but I really wanted to take advantage of the wide open aperture. It just makes so much more fun when you can easily shot between ISO 200-400 and a shutter speed of 1/400 of a second. Do to the small stage, the 50mm on a crop sensor proved to be a bit too long and full body shots required me to get to the far edges of the photopit. Nonetheless I got rewarded with some fantastic Images and even though zoom lenses are so much more convenient, I would use nothing else then primes if I could.

I just stopped by really quickly between Bands to get a couple of shots of The Bonny Situation so I can’t say much about their show. The people in front of the stage seemed to like it though and who am I to doubt them?

Shooting Notes
It was quite dark under the roof of the WAZ-Bühne and I had to watch out and adjust my settings as soon as anyone of the Band stepped towards the back of the stage. Overall the shooting was pretty easy though and do to the limited space the Band wasn’t moving that much and you could easily capture the action happening. I was shooting mainly with the Canon 24-70 and got the Sigma 50mm out for a couple of shots before leaving

Ginger Ninja from Denmark were up next on the 1Live Stage at the Bochum Total 2011. With their interesting mix of rock and electronic elements they attracted quite a crowd and by the amount of cheers and screams they seemed to really enjoyed it.

Shooting Notes
Shooting Ginger Ninja you had to watch out a bit when trying to capture Singer Henrik Hamilton and Bassplayer Carl Riestra because they were ‘hiding’ most of the show behind their keyboards. Other then that shooting was pretty straight and simple. With more then enough light you didn’t had to worry much about shutter speed or ISO and could concentrate on framing the Band and capturing the stagelight.

The Indie-Rockers of Auletta started the Day for me playing the 1Live stage. The Band played a fun set and really seemed to enjoy their time. Singer Alexander Zwick was all over the stage as the rest of the Band and made the show a lot of fun to watch and shoot.

Shooting Notes
Shooting the 1Live Stage was a lot easier then the other once around the festival, do to the fact that the light was just the best and also it was out of direct sunlight. So I was shooting wide open at f2.8 with an ISO of 400 to keep my shutter speed at 1/200 of a second and up. Just for a couple of shots in the end I got the EF-s 10-22 out bumping the ISO up to 800 to compensate for the difference in aperture.

Benzin were the first Band for me shooting at Bochum Total 2011 and they definitely made for a great opener. With their high energy rock Sound and stage show it was quite a lot of fun and with the sun coming out between the clouds, people were really enjoying themselves.

Shooting Notes
As nice as it is to have sun at a festival day, it is quite a pain in the butt shooting when it is shining right on the stage. This 3-stop light difference between the guys standing in the back of the stage in the the shadow and them coming forward to the edge of the stage right in the sun, made it quite a lot of work. So I was constantly changing my shutter speed between 1/160 and 1/1000 of a second, trying to compensate for the different amounts of light.

I just stopped by really quick for some pictures of Kellermensch passing by to the other stages, so I can’t really give an in depth review of the Band. But I can say that what I gathered while shooting, was quite interesting and different.

Shooting Notes
With it being early in the day and still quite bright outside, there was no need to watch out for much while shooting the Band. There was plenty of light and by this time of day the sun moved so much, that it wasn’t shining directly on the stage, so you didn’t had to watch out for huge differences in exposure.

Sunday was the last Day of the Bochum Total Festival 2011 and even though we got lucky with the weather the days before, it was raining almost constantely on the last day. This still didn’t keep the people from coming to shows though.

Working today was so much more fun then yesterday, because getting around was so much easier. Bochum Total 2011 had a great Line up for the Saturday with Auletta, Ginger Ninja, The Bonny Situation, The Frits and Alin Coen Band.

Carpark North – Bochum Total 2011

This was the first time I ever heard about Carpark North, to be honest with you. As a metal guy I am not really up to date all the time when it comes to Bands in other genres, so I was really curious about them. What can I say, the Band blew me away with their electro-rock sound and energetic live show. Fun, action packed and great Songs, really made this show my favourite of the day and I definitely advice you to check the Band out.

Shooting Notes
It was still early in the day and even though the space in front of the stage was pretty full, there was no need to hurry while shooting, which was pretty nice and gave me the chance to get all my lenses out the bag and shot as much as I wanted getting to know the stage, light and angles for the next Bands coming up this weekend. With it being still bright outside shooting was pretty easy at f2.8, ISO 400 and a shutter speed of about 1/400. I even got to use my Sigma 50mm f1.4 on a show for the first time and I got to say that I love the look, even though I just snapped a couple of frames. I hope I can use the lens more often in the next days and will definitely get me some more primes for my concert bag.

Jupiter Jones – Bochum Total 2011

Fridays Headlining Band on the 1Live Stage was Jupiter Jones. The Punk-Rock-Band around Singer Nicholas Müller didn’t seem to get as much response as Casper right away, still the place was full and people seemed to look forward to the show. It might have helped, that the Bands main audience seemed to be a bit older in generell in comparison to Caspers so everything was a bit more laid back. Nonetheless the guys on stage played a great show, which was a lot of fun to watch.

Shooting Notes
By now it was a getting darker outside, so I had to jump up a stop with the ISO to compensate for the missing light, going to 800, and also lowered my shutter speed to 200 with not that much fast movements happening on stage. I was still shooting mainly with the Canon EF 24-70 at f2.8, but had enough time to use the 70-200 f2.8 as well this time. Even though the Ef-s 10-22 wasn’t working that well, I got to use it for some shots, which meant that I had to up my ISO to 1250 and lowered my shutterspeed to 160 of a second to compensate for the smaller aperture of the lens.
